Conversations with God and Health

Joseph Murphy, who had many conversations with God, was a student of New Thought, and greatly influenced by Ernest Holmes and Emmet Fox and bible study. I first discovered his book, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind and The Amazing Laws of Cosmic Mind Power in the early 90's. Joseph Murphy, as did Holmes, spent time in India and was an Andhra Research Fellow at the University of India.

He sounds like Bob Proctor when he says,

“You were born to be rich. You grow rich by the use of your God-given faculties, by tuning in with the Infinite, and as your mind becomes productive and full of good ideas, your labor will become more productive and will bring you all kinds of material riches."

“There is no virtue whatsoever in poverty, which in actual fact is a mental disease, and it should be abolished from the face of the earth."

He confirms from his own conversations with God, that idea posited by Mike Dooley , that manifestation works backward from the idea to the parts or elements that must be in place beforehand.

While the conscious mind sees an event, takes a picture of it and remembers it, the subconscious mind works backwards, ‘seeing’ something before it happens (which is why intuition is infallible).

It makes no sense then to listen constantly to all the negative news on 24 hour news channels , or 24 hour talk radio. Since our subconscious mind operates from pictures , isn't it preferable to program it with wonderful and exciting pictures rather than with images of war, poverty and inhuman acts? Meditate, and have your own conversations with God on a daily basis. Fill your subconscious with love.

Your subconscious does not argue. As Joseph Murphy says, if you say, "I was born on the wrong side of the tracks" or "I am stymied and blocked" or "Only those with money can make money" you are blocking your own good and bringing lack, limitation and frustration into your life. If you say, "Everyone in my family dies young," your subconscious does not argue. Once you program it with an idea, it will follow your command. If you say, "I can't afford it," your subconscious will work to make it true. Do yourself a favor, choose to buy whatever you desire and be happy about it in your mind and accept that you will be given what you want. Any ideas planted in your subconscious are like conversations with God.

Affirmations are conversations with God

So, let's program our subconscious with a full array of great suggestions. As Joseph Murphy says in The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, "Think good and good follows." Mike Dooley and Chellie Campbell ( suggest that we review these helpful beliefs on a daily basis no matter what our former beliefs were:_________________________________________

1. I believe that I are worthy and will manifest my dream!

2. I believe that there is enough for anyone and that more will be produced.

3. Having yours, does not stop anyone else from having theirs.

4. If I have more, it will help me to do more good.

5. I have dominion over all things and can manifest any dream I want.

6. The Universe will provide for you. If you take the step, the landing will be there. Until you take the step, you won't see the ledge.

7. I am getting closer every day to manifesting my dream, and every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.

8. My affirmations work for me, whether I believe they will or not. (This is for the skeptics among you.)

9. I am a money magnet!

10. I am in charge of my body. I produce antibodies and youth hormone as needed. My weight will be optimal for my health and well being, allowing me to manifest <&emsp><&emsp>my dreams and to enjoy them once I have them. My subconscious, that made every organ perfect in the beginning, can repair what it once created.

11. Money comes to me easily and effortlessly, waking and sleeping.

12. I am now highly pleasing to myself in other people’s presence.

13. I walk, talk, look, act, think and am rich!

14. I am a winner--I win often, and I win big!

15. Something wonderful is happening to me today—I can feel it!

16. Life and all is Good, and Nature, from her clearly visible surface to her most arcane depths, is one vast storehouse of life and good entirely devoted to our individual use. We have the key to all her treasures.

Your subconscious mind, like the spiritual world or the Divine Matrix or the Collective Unconscious, does not know logic, time or space. This allows it to travel forward and backward in space-time. (By the way, physicists have no reason to believe that we cannot as easily influence the past as we can the future. There is not any scientific reason/proof to believe that time only works in one direction. Our subconscious seems as ready to change the past as it is to change the future, so be careful what you ask for through your beliefs and actions and your prayer or conversations with God.)

Healing Our Bodies

Joseph Murphy, in The Power of Your Subconscious Mind tells a powerful story about healing. A clergyman, he explains, told him the hidden meaning of the 139th psalm,

"In thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."
Was this learned through conversations with God we wonder?

The clergyman told him that the "book" was his subconscious. Since it had originally made all the organs and tissues of your body from a single cell, whenever needed it would be able to recreate or heal any part of it.

He explains that a watch is made by a watchmaker from an idea. If something goes wrong in the watch, or if something breaks, the watchmaker would still have the idea of a working watch in mind and would have the knowledge to fix it.

From this belief, Joseph Murphy fashioned a prayer for his personal use and conversations with God. He had a skin malignancy that had frustrated the best doctors of his day. But, before we give you his prayer, we want to remind you of the healing shown by Gregg Braden in the video embedded in our pages on Wallace Wattles . This healing is performed by 3 practitioners on a woman with an inoperable tumor in her abdomen. As Gregg explains, the practitioners did not pray/wish/visualize her tumor away, but they prayed and visualized her as never sick.

His prayer was

My body and all its organs were created by infinite intelligence in my subconscious mind. It knows how to heal me. Its wisdom fashioned all my organs, tissues, muscles, and bones. This infinite healing presence within me is now transforming every cell of my being, making me whole and perfect. I give thanks for the healing I know is taking place at this time. Wonderful are the works of the creative intelligence within me.

Joseph Murphy explains that he repeated this prayer aloud 2 or 3 times a day in conversations with God. After 3 months, his skin was whole and perfect. The malignancy had vanished.

Our Beliefs

About 150 years ago, in Maine, Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby said that "If you believe something, it will manifest, whether you are consciously thinking of it or not." My father, Harry K. Stremmel, Jr. used to say, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." If we think of both these statements, we can see that our incomplete contemporary knowledge of medicine and the beliefs it engenders can cause us harm.

In my lifetime, heart attacks were a major killer in America. Certainly in my family they were. When I was in college and afterward, it became popular to give up butter and switch to margarine because butter (saturated) fat was believed to be a major culprit in causing heart attacks. Long chain (poly unsaturated) fats were preferred by doctors.

It was true that the Japanese, who did not use butter or dairy products, had fewer heart attacks, as did Mediterranean people who eat more seafood than meat (saturated fat). However, it was also true that the French who use lots of butter and the English who use the most wonderful, thick cream, and eat meat had fewer heart attacks. Julia Child, a master of French cooking, did not worry at all about butter and pointed out that the long chain oils (sesame and sunflower and soy) put hard yellow dots on your stove or walls, whereas olive oil did not.

Those Americans who switched to margarine and vegetable oils were not spared their share of heart attacks. It was later "discovered" that olive oil was the most wonderful fat which was why those cultures that used olive oil were immunized against heart attacks. And, it was "discovered" that hydrogenated fats (margarine) are as bad as or worse than saturated fats. Science seldom relies on conversations with God, although most scientists will tell you that they believe in God.

If you tried to follow every health "discovery", you would be changing your beliefs about your food back and forth and would be very confused. Perhaps there was another reason Americans suffered more heart attacks than other people, that had nothing to do with food. Perhaps it has more to do with life style. Few Americans, even now, meditate or have their own conversations with God. Europeans have three month vacations and many Americans can't manage even two consecutive weeks off with family or friends.

Rather than looking at what we do wrong, let's look at what healthy people do right. A study of people who had lived to be 100 years old, found that they were happy. There food habits varied, and some smoked cigars or pipes. As a group they had healthy genes, as shown by long living family members. As a group, they had friends and added new acquaintances to their lives, and lived on their own into their seventies. As a group, they continued to learn new things or to engage in mentally challenging activities. The men who lived long lives were in exceptional physical shape. This did not seem to matter for women as much although being of low or modest weight seems to be common. There was no report on whether these people meditated or had regular conversations with God.

From a study in New England, you can Google centenarian, although some reports claim that people are living longer, this does not prove to be true:

There are numerous instances of people living well into their nineties reported as far back as the sixteenth century. Titian, the well known Italian master painter, lived to at least age 90 and may have been as old as 99 years of age. Hippocrates reportedly died in his mid eighties. To say that life span also doubled in even the last thousand years would be hard to substantiate, especially from an evolutionary point of view.
In ancient times, before the Enlightenment, we have reason to believe that people regularly had conversations with God.

Neale Donald Walsch, in his conversations with God , reports that God said that our bodies are meant to live forever. Do yourself a favor and choose a belief that will prolong your healthy life, rather than shortening it.

Steps in Healing:

1) Do not be afraid of the condition, whatever it is and whatever a doctor has ever said about it. Fear (darkness) creates poisons in your body. Choose love (light and laughter) instead.

2) Realize that the condition is only a result of past thinking, which will have no more power to continue to exist.

3) Exalt the miraculous healing power of God within you and be grateful for your continued good health. Include in your life only those friends and family who support this belief.

Do all this in your own meditation practice as you have conversations with God.
